Last weekend’s sold-out show with Joe Pug and Bhi Bhiman was an absolute blast. Kronosphere said “the crowd was crazy quiet…so respectful…so enamored of an opening act like D’Amato,” but things are going to be rowdier this Friday night (3/1) at Bowery Electric. FULL BAND show with Joe Fletcher and Jonah Tolchin, who I met performing at the 2012 Newport Folk Festival.

I saw Joe play at the Newport Folk Festival several years ago and it was one of those moments that stops you dead in your tracks and reminds you how powerful one voice and one guitar can be. I wrote about it for Rock Torch, which anthologized my piece in their new book and accompanied it with the above illustration. Joe’s a brilliant lyricist, and it’s a true honor to open for him and Bhi Bhiman, another phenomenal songwriter I highly recommend.

In other words, I was going to this show no matter what. Hope to see you there!

On “Hank Williams Tune,” Jersey folksinger Anthony D’Amato namechecks Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan’s “Ballad in Plain D” and Jack Kerouac’s dharma bums. To say he embraces traditionalism is a massive understatement. But “Paper Back Bones,” D’Amato’s second album, is a bold step forward for a young man who loves looking over his shoulder. He hasn’t ditched the Dylanesque delivery, the harmonica or the ’60s-inspired acoustic arrangements, and “Arrowhead,” a tale of a star-crossed working-class family, makes its debt to Dylan’s “North Country Blues” evident. But he’s developed some new strategies for addressing his audience. “Paper Back Bones” finds him growing into his role as a bandleader and shepherding a country-rock combo through the upbeat “Ends Meet” and the campfire singalong “On the Banks of the River Where I Died.” He saves his best surprise for last: “Ballad of the Sleepless,” a moody, five-minute reflection that’s more Nick Drake than Dylan, and that plays like nothing else in his catalog. Like many songs on “Bones,” it’s colored by fiddlers Amanda Shires and Brittany Haas, whose playing provides an Appalachian breeze.
